Questions and answers
Continuous design validation, explained
What is continuous design validation?
Continuous design validation is the automatic checking of a construction design against the project's requirements every time the design changes, rather than at a few review milestones. Each new design version is compared with the requirements configured for the project, drawn from its specifications, contract, sales commitments and regulations, and deviations are reported with their location. The aim is to catch mistakes while they are still cheap to fix, before they reach tender, procurement or the site.
What is Beamware?
Beamware is a continuous design validation platform for the organisations responsible for the commercial outcome, design quality and delivery of a construction project: developers and owners, design-build general contractors, and construction management and owner's representative firms. It connects to the project's existing design environment and validates each published design version against built-in checks and the project's configured requirements. Findings are reported with the element, floor, grid and requirement clause, so the design team can act on them without a separate review cycle.
Who is Beamware built for?
Beamware is built for the organisations responsible for the outcome of a construction project. Real-estate developers use it to confirm that what is being designed matches what was sold, signed and required by regulation. Design-build general contractors use it to find coordination and compliance problems before work reaches the field. Construction management and owner's representative firms use it to strengthen the design oversight they already provide across projects and disciplines. It is not a tool for individual designers or BIM consultants, and the design team does not need to operate it.
What does Beamware validate designs against?
Beamware validates designs against both built-in checks and project-specific requirements. These can include building codes and regulations, project specifications, contracts, sales commitments, design standards and coordination requirements. Project-specific checks are configured for each project and continuously applied as the design evolves.
Can BIM models be checked against contracts and sales specifications automatically?
Yes. Beamware turns the commitments in a sales specification or contract, such as room areas, room counts and balcony sizes, into checks that run automatically on each published model version. Each result names the apartment or space, the measured value and the value that was promised, so the developer can confirm the design still matches what was sold as it evolves.
Can BIM models be checked against regulatory requirements?
Yes. Beamware can automatically validate BIM models against building codes and regulatory requirements, including dimensions, clearances, accessibility, safety and other model-based requirements. Findings identify the relevant requirement and show where the issue occurs in the design. Beamware can also combine regulatory checks with project-specific requirements in the same validation process.
Does Beamware integrate with Autodesk Construction Cloud and Autodesk Forma?
Yes. Beamware connects to Autodesk Construction Cloud projects, including models published through Autodesk Forma Design Collaboration (formerly BIM Collaborate Pro), using the Autodesk Platform Services APIs. Beamware is an Autodesk authorised developer. When a designer publishes a new model version, Beamware is notified and the validation run starts automatically. Nothing is installed on the design side and the project's Autodesk setup stays as it is.
Does the design team need to change their Revit or ACC workflow?
No. Architects and engineers keep modelling in Revit and publishing to Autodesk Construction Cloud exactly as they do today. Beamware adapts to each project's modelling conventions, naming and family choices rather than asking the design team to change them. The only new thing the team sees is the findings report and the notification that announces it.
What happens when a new design version is published?
Each published version is automatically validated against the checks configured for the project. New findings are reported with the element, floor, grid, the model version that raised them and the clause they were checked against. Issues that were fixed since the previous version are confirmed as validated, and stakeholders are notified when new findings appear.
What types of design issues can Beamware detect?
Beamware detects deviations from building codes, project requirements and design standards. Examples include insufficient door clearance, a room smaller than specified, an electrical outlet too close to a wet area, insufficient guardrail height, missing or misplaced fixtures, and coordination issues between disciplines. Beamware combines built-in checks with project-specific requirements, so validations reflect both common standards and what matters to each project.
Can Beamware validate architectural and MEP designs?
Yes. Beamware validates architecture, electrical, plumbing and HVAC models. Each discipline is checked on its own and against the architect's spaces, so an electrical element is tested against the room it sits in, not only against its own model. Coordination checks cover the same space across more than one discipline.
How is continuous validation different from a traditional design review?
A traditional design review checks one drawing set at one point in time, and anything that changes afterwards is unchecked until the next review. Continuous validation runs on each published design version, so a requirement that was met last week is re-confirmed this week and a new deviation is reported the day it appears. It complements the expert review rather than replacing it, by taking over the repetitive re-checking that people cannot sustain.
How can developers reduce design errors before construction?
Developers reduce design errors by checking each design update against the project's commitments as soon as it is published, instead of discovering deviations at tender or on site. Continuous validation gives the development team a current picture of where the design does and does not meet its configured requirements from the sales plan, contract and regulations. That lets them raise issues with the design team early, when a fix is a model change rather than a change order.
How can design-build contractors reduce rework caused by design issues?
Design-build contractors reduce rework by finding compliance and coordination problems in the design before it is issued for construction. Continuous validation flags issues such as elements placed against regulations or conflicts between disciplines on each design version, with the exact location. Catching these before the field does reduces RFIs, change orders and schedule loss.
Can construction management and owner's representative firms use Beamware?
Yes. Construction management and owner's representative firms use Beamware as a force multiplier for the design oversight they already provide. Beamware continuously checks evolving designs against the project's requirements in the background, so the CM team sees requirement gaps and coordination risks earlier and can give the owner a current view of design quality and project risk. It does not replace the construction manager or their professional services; it removes the manual re-checking so their expertise goes to decisions and coordination.
How does a Beamware demonstration on my own project work?
Beamware can demonstrate the system on the customer's actual project and designs. Beamware connects to the project, sets up the requirements that matter to the owner, validates the current design and walks through the real findings with the team. The scope and commercial structure are agreed in the sales conversation.
